Yet another house has collapsed on the North Carolina Coast. The incident is the latest in a series of collapses in the area, due to erosion and coastal storms.
According to the National Park Service (NPS) in Cape Hatteras collapse occurred around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18. As Fox Weather reports, the home was unoccupied a the time.
Since 2020, 22 homes have collapsed on North Carolina’s National Seashore. This is the 10th home in Buxton to collapse since September, and the 11th on Hatteras Island. The collapses have been so frequent that, at one point, five homes collapsed within one hour in Buxton Beach in September.
At the time, Hatteras local Jenni Koontz predicted that the five collapses were far from the end of the destruction. “Yeah, so those houses are all hanging on by a thread,” she told Fox Weather. “A lot of them are missing a lot of pilings that are holding them up, and they’re slowly losing more and more. Some of the homes are braced and a little bit stronger, but for the most part, they’re all vulnerable. And this beach is just getting started with the weather. So I imagine there’s going to be many more that fall.”
