Winter is making a big appearance right before Halloween this year. A strong atmospheric river is predicted to power heavy snowstorms in most Western States with up to three feet of the white stuff expected in some locations. It’s the kind of start to winter most of us wish for. Let’s just hope it’s the start of great things to come.
The storm started off Thursday in Colorado’s Great Divide, where, according to our friends at PowderChasers, some areas at higher elevations picked up eight inches or so, with parts of the Northern Rockies looking at nearly a foot of new snow.
But the bulk of this storm, and the atmospheric river, are aimed at the Pacific Northwest and Canada. Washington’s Mount Baker is predicted to receive at least 14 inches with Whistler looking at a possible 24 inches. The majority of this snowfall is expected to come Friday into Saturday.
But an even bulkier part of the storm is expected Saturday through at least Tuesday, when most of Idaho, Montana, Utah and Colorado should receive a foot plus of low-elevation snow, according to models. Unfortunately, California is looking a little dry through this system, says Powderchasers. Western Canada should receive snow throughout the entire week.
Storm summary: most of the Western States in the northern part of the country should see storms with even the Four Corners region of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah expected to cash in. Stay tuned as we bring you footage of the first turns for snow aficionados out West next week!
