A new surfing wave pool is coming to China. Last we heard of the project was in December of 2024, when American Wave Machines announced it was partnering with China Tourism Group to develop a PerfectSwell surf resort in China. Now, thanks to a new press release from the organization, we have more details on the resort itself, as well as an opening date.
Riyue Bay Surf Resort spans 25 acres and, in addition to its wave pool, features a surf-themed hotel, a “designer boutique hotel,” and a retail district. The resort is in Riyue Bay, located in Wanning, on Hainan Island’s southeast coast. Riyue Bay is the center of China’s surfing scene and the home of China’s national surfing team.
At the heart of the development is an American Wave Machines-designed wave pool. The facility uses a hydraulic wave-making system, featuring 30 pneumatic chambers. According to the resort, the pool can generate waves from 1.5 to nine feet tall, with rides lasting up to 18 seconds and waves generated every six seconds. Like many pools around the world, the wave can be customized depending on the desired user experience, with 23 distinct wave configurations.
“The opening of Riyue Bay Surf Resort not only introduces a new category of surf-inspired hospitality to China but also marks a new chapter for Wanning’s growing surf community,” wrote Riyue Bay Surf Resort. “As a showcase property along the Hainan Coastal Scenic Highway, the resort is set to elevate the region’s tourism appeal, attract trend-setting travelers from around the world, and contribute to Hainan’s vision of becoming a leading international leisure and vacation destination.”
So when is this all going to be actually open to the public? According to the press release, the doors open on November 11, 2025.
