Encinitas, California native Spencer Whiting, aka Gimbal God, has chased some of the world’s most talented snowboarders down mountains with a Go Pro in his hand. He’s earned a front row seat to watch the sport’s high-performance evolution in an incredibly unique way, so he undoubtedly has unique insight about athletes too. It’s “wild how good everyone is these days,” he admits.
One person he’s apparently never ridden with though is Zeb Powell, which seems like such an obvious collaboration that it’s crazy to realize it’s taken so long to come to fruition. According to Whiting, they’ve crossed paths plenty over the years, just never with enough downtime to hammer out a session. That changed in late September though. Powell set out to nail a double cork 1080 using a 205cm board (yes, 205 cm). Gimbal God’s footage of the session is a fun one to watch. Zeb is his normal humble and excited self who creates pure chaos the moment he takes off down the hill. Even his wipeouts are exciting to watch.
“That might have been some of the most impressive snowboarding I’ve seen in a two-hour window,” Whiting tells Powell at the end of their last run.
That’s some high praise coming from a guy who’s seen it all (and then shared a front row seat with all of us) over the past decade.
