The Inertia

Surfboards get more expensive every year, but this is getting ridiculous. One company has created a $25,000 motorized board, and the YouTuber collective known as “The Sickos” got their hands on it in their latest video.

Though you wouldn’t think it to look at them, The Sickos might actually be some of the more qualified people for this test. That’s because this is far from their first time tangling with powered surfboards. They started off with a WaveJet, a hard-to-find model of jet-powered watercraft. Next was towing behind an electric RC boat. Most recently, they got their hands on a Surf Jet, a gas-powered model from the ’80s, which came complete with 255cc, two-stroke engine and razor-sharp metal fins.

They applied that wealth of experience (though perhaps a questionable amount of actual knowledge) to the Lind electric surfboard, a device that manages to eke out a top speed of around 40 miles per hour, from a craft that looks pretty much just like an extra thick shortboard.

“This, in my opinion, is the most impressive piece of technology we have,” explained Lind Surf head of sales Tim McCollough. “We took two motors and put them in here. Those two motors spin at 30,000 rpm. An F1 car motor spins at 14,000 RPM.”

It’s not the first time the Lind has found its way into the hands of an influencer. Earlier this year, skimboarder Blair Conklin put the craft through its paces. He even took it out in some real surf – something the board was not exactly designed to do.

So, how did the Lind match up against the Sicko’s other powered surfing experiences? “It’s about 200 times sicker than anything we’ve ever tried,” said Sickos member Forest Lawson. “This is the funnest thing I’ve ever done.”
