Ben Gravy is on a mission. This year, he has set himself the task of surfing every single named storm in the Atlantic hurricane season. So far, he has ridden Tropical Storm Andrea, Tropical Storm Barry, Tropical Storm Chantal, Tropical Storm Dexter, Hurricane Erin, Tropical Storm Fernand and Hurricane Gabrielle. Most recently, he added Humberto to the list, as he detailed in his most recent video.
Unlike many of the names from that list, though, Humberto actually had some oomph to it. It’s been an unusually quiet Atlantic hurricane season, this year, meaning that most of the time Gravy’s been trying to eke out something from nothing. That’s not the case this time, though.
“We’re looking at some really nice, solid hurricane conditions,” said Gravy, as he looked at the forecast going into the excursion. Immediately, he packed a quiver and journeyed out to the waves, just in time to witness the oncoming swell grow into something to behold.
“Super long period, waves are pretty small, but that’s a good thing, because it means the storm’s coming,” he explained from the shore. “We know where it is and it’s far enough away to be sending – I’m going to say some of those were one foot at 16 [seconds]. By tomorrow morning it’s going to be bigger, by tomorrow afternoon it should be bombing.”
Over the next few days, that’s exactly what happened. Check it out in the full video below.
