J-Bay is a wave that exposes flaws. The more perfect the canvas, the more glaring the mistakes of the artist who paints on it. Luckily, Bryce Baker doesn’t have many flaws in his surfing, and J-Bay offered up a wonderful canvas for him.
He’s not a guy who rides a standard thruster if there’s something else kicking around in the quiver. That’s not to say that he can’t — far from it. It’s just to say that give the guy a large wave face and a fish, and he’s going to make things happen.
In the video you see here, presented by the inimitable Mollusk Surf Shop, Baker takes on the world’s best right-hand point break on a 5’10” MPE Coho Fish and a 5’6″ Toy Boat Flathead Fish. And damned if it doesn’t look like he made the right board choices for the conditions.
