Haunted Candle Shoppe of the Poconos in Swiftwater, Pennsylvania

Travel Uncategorized

At first glance, this roadside candle shop in the Poconos looks like a quaint spot to pick up gifts and home décor. But beneath the warm glow of wax and wicks is a basement with a far darker history.

The building was once the home and laboratory of Dr. William Redwood Fisher, who in the early 20th century conducted biological research here. His experiments on primates contributed to advancements in vaccines for smallpox and yellow fever. Original cages, equipment, and lab relics remain preserved in the cellar.

Today, the basement is open for tours, but many visitors report eerie encounters while exploring it, phantom sounds of monkeys echoing in the dark, sudden grabs from unseen “little hands,” and a heavy atmosphere that lingers long after leaving. The site has been featured on paranormal TV shows, cementing its reputation as both a bizarre museum of medical history and a genuine haunting ground.
