The Inertia

The wave at Jeffreys Bay is one of the best waves on the planet. When it’s working, it’s just about as perfect as a wave can be. It picks up a lot of swell, and on September 16, things were wild, woolly, and extraordinarily fun.

“Wow, what a session!” wrote Down the Line, a YouTube channel dedicated to documenting the surf at places like J-Bay, Bruce’s Beauties, and Seal Point. “Going through the footage, I honestly didn’t realize how solid this swell was — heavy, powerful, and pure magic.”

When the weather is like it was on September 16, surfing is a little tougher. The wind was howling and the waves weren’t picture perfect — but conditions like those can be incredibly fun. And as an added bonus, it keeps the frothing masses at home.

“It was a mission to film — the wind was howling, the rain relentless — but that’s what makes days like this so special,” Down the Line continued. “I love these kinds of sessions. The beach banter, the energy, the laughter when someone cops a proper beating — and that shared look knowing your turn’s coming the second you paddle out. This is what surfing’s all about. The rawness, the connection, the stoke. I love J-Bay — filming it, surfing it, just being out there when the ocean’s alive. These off-season days are gold — when you can score wave after wave with just a handful of guys in the lineup. Pure bliss.”
