Jack Robinson Undergoes Surgery to Fix 2023 Meniscus Injury

The ghost of injuries past has finally come to visit Jack Robinson. As the Australian surfer announced on social media, he recently took a break from his busy schedule to undergo surgery to repair a lingering meniscus injury from years ago.

The injury originally occurred while Robinson was surfing at Bells Beach in 2023. At first, he downplayed it, saying, “On my last wave I did a layback and my leg turned in a funny angle – I’m resting up, healing and will see everyone at the next comp.”

However, soon after, it turned out to be more serious than initially thought – requiring Robinson to pull out of that year’s Margaret River Pro. “During my heat at Bells, I ended up injuring my meniscus (cartilage in my knee),” Robinson added in a later update. “After reviewing with a few specialists, and discussions with my team, I’ll be pulling out of the Margaret River Pro. As you all know, Margs is my home break, and I’m always looking forward to being in Western Australia. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete at Margs, but it’s what’s best for my recovery and longterm goals. Next week I’ll be starting physiotherapy. I’m confident I’ll be back for the next event.”

Since then, Robinson has managed to recover remarkably well – making it through two competitive seasons and the Olympic Games. However, the time finally came to take action.

“With the right training and diet, the doctors were impressed that it actually reattached almost completely on its own without surgery, but the pain never fully went away, and I couldn’t push to my limits,” explained Robinson in an Instagram post of him on crutches. “Now with a bit of time off, it was finally time to get it sorted properly. Surgery went well and I’m focused on healing up, rebuilding strength, and coming back better than ever. Grateful for my sponsors for supporting my decisions and backing me with the best support around the world – with physios, doctors, dietitians and all in between! And to my family always by my side.”
