The Inertia

As Kelly Slater’s career as a full-time tour surfer fades into memory, it’s becoming increasingly rare to watch the GOAT in action. So when he does paddle out, it’s a treat for surf fans.

Southern California surfers got that treat when Slater showed up at Lower Trestles as Hurricane Narda was delivering a healthy south swell to the coast. While Newport Beach grabbed much of the media spotlight, Slater opted for San Clemente’s cobblestone magnet to score his share.

Even after more than half a century on Earth, Slater remains nimble. Though Trestles offered a softer version of its usual self, his smooth bottom turns and precise rail work reminded everyone why he’s still mesmerizing to watch.

Slater only made two Championship Tour appearances this year – Pipeline and Trestles. It’s still uncertain whether the WSL will give him any wildcards for 2025, but even if he’s past his prime, fans won’t mind if they do. Watching Slater surf is still something to savor. Enjoy it while it lasts.
