The Inertia

If you are an avid follower of all things surf, you’re likely aware that Koa Rothman recently scrapped a California trip in favor of heading home to Hawaii to greet the first Pipe swell of the season. Well, turns out that it was a good decision, because Pipeline was good. Really good, especially considering that it’s still October.

“We are back,” Koa exclaimed. “My favorite wave in the world — I think everyone’s favorite wave in the world — is the Banzai Pipeline… It is the first swell of the season. Pipeline is here.”

Already, the sand is being pushed off the beach and off the reefs. As the day wore on, the waves just got better and better. “Better and better” at Pipeline, though, means that the consequences go way up and Koa found himself with a chest full of water and a 10-foot set on his head. But that’s just a good way to wash the summer dust off, right?
