Historians debate why Caerphilly Castle’s southeast tower leans. Some say the tower was damaged during the English Civil War in the 17th century. Others say the lean is actually the result of natural subsistence and weathering.
Whatever the causes of the lean, the castle’s leaning Southeast Tower is a spectacular sight. Perhaps less famous than its Italian cousin, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which leans at 4 degrees, the southeast tower leans at a much steeper angle of about 10 degrees.
